What is an Oodle?

Oodles are a cross breed between a poodle (toy, miniature or standard) and another dog breed. Some common Oodles are;

  • Cavoodle/Cavapoo: Poodle x Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

  • Labradoodle: Poodle x Labrador

  • Groodle/Golden Doodle: Poodle x Golden Retriever

  • Spoodle: Poodle x Spaniel (usually Cocker Spaniel - Cockerpoo)

  • Schnoodle: Poodle x Schnauzer

  • Maltipoo: Poodle x Maltese

  • Shih Poo: Poodle x Shih Tzu

  • Bordoodle: Poodle x Border Collie

  • Sheepadoodle: Poodle x Old English Sheepdog

  • Yorkipoo: Poodle x Yorkshire Terrier

  • Plus many, many more

Oodle breeding first began in 1989 when Wally Conron mixed a Labrador with a Poodle. He was attempting to create seeing eye dogs that had “the working ability of the labrador and the coat of the poodle” for people that needed assistance animals but were allergic to dogs. From there, demand for oodle crossbreeds grew until today where the Cavoodle, Spoodle & Groodle are within the top 10 breeds list in Australia.

Oodle Coat Types

There is no one coat type for any oodle breed. Poodles have a single, wool coat that is low-shedding, but gets knotty & matted quite quickly if not maintained. Conversely, most of the common breeds that they are mixed with are coarse, double coated, mid-high shedding breeds. If you remember year 9 science with the pea plant alleles, when mixing different traits, there is no one determined outcome. Oodle coats can vary along a spectrum depending on the set of dominant & recessive genes your pup got in the genetic lottery of conception. Even coat types within the same litter can vary drastically.

This variation in coat types means there’s no one size fits all approach for maintaining or styling an Oodle as each one is unique. If you would like more information or insight into your Oodles coat type & how to maintain it, feel free to ask at your next grooming session.
